In May 2017 St. Joseph's was graded as 'GOOD' by OFSTED. We are very proud of this. Ofsted stated 'Effective leadership and teaching have ensured that the school’s end-of-key-stage test results are now significantly above the national expected average in all areas reported on'.

It is important that all items of school uniform are clearly labelled with the child’s name.

Dress for PE

Indoor Kit—black shorts (not cycling shorts), plain white T-shirt and black plimsolls are appropriate for indoor work. All children are required to have an indoor kit which is to be kept in school during term time.

Outdoor Kit—Key Stage 2

Children in Key Stage 2 also require an outdoor PE kit which should include a track suit and water-proof jacket. Please note that the children can be out in wet weather so spare socks are essential as well as trainers. Jeans are not appropriate for PE.

KS2 pupils will also participate in swimming.

They will require a suitable swimming costume or trunks (no long shorts) and a towel. Swimming caps must be worn by all girls and boys with longer length hair. Earrings must be removed. If you would like your child to wear goggles, permission must be given.

Cloakroom space is restricted and parents are requested not to buy large holdalls for their children. A small bag is quite sufficient. All items of PE kit should be clearly labelled with the child’s name.

The following points are also established when the children first start in Reception and continue through to Year 6:

  • In the interest of health and safety, jewellery is not permissible in school.

  • Children with pierced ears may wear a pair of small plain studs, which must be removed for PE. Earrings must be removed by children and not by teachers. If children are to have their ears pierced, please ensure this is at the start of the summer holidays, so that they are healed in time for returning to school.

  • Sensible watches may be worn but must be removed for PE. Watches are not to be worn in Reception.

  • Extremes of fashion are not acceptable in shoes, hairstyles and other aspects of appearance.

  • Long hair should be tied back with sensible bands/headbands (in green, black or brown).

  • Sensible footwear, not trainers, should be worn in school. Black soled trainers must not be worn because they mark the floors.

  • Nail varnish and make-up are not part of school uniform.

  • Mobile phones should not be brought into school except by arrangement.
